Hebrews 4:16, Exodus 4:1-9, 1 Samuel 16:7, Deut 28:12, Deut 15:6 -11 John 2:1-11, Mark 16: 17-18 Acts 19:11-12
Men and brethren, Grace means to get something that you do not deserve; unmerited favour. The scripture says in Hebrews 4:16 ‘Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need’. Miracle is an extension of divine grace to people who are not qualified by merit to possess it. A miracle is an act that defies the laws of nature. Any time God wants to interrupt anything, he sends his word to perform miracles. He told Moses, when he murmured and complained about his vocal inefficiency, when he murmured about the fear of the Israelites mocking him, when he feared Pharaoh, “What is that in your hand?” Exodus 4:2. Today, God wants to use what you have. He has extended his Power to you and waiting for you to take charge. Therefore, wherever you are right now, however you are, whatever you have, is more than enough for God. You have a miracle in your hands.
During the era of Moses, the rod was used to guide, lead and protect the sheep. It was used to support the shepherd and help him climb up and down the steep mountain places as he led and looked for his sheep. It was used to defend the flock and the shepherd against the attacks of wild animals and others who would threaten the flock. Moses depended on that rod every day he lived. That rod identified Moses as a shepherd. When people saw that rod in his hand, they would immediately know who he was! That rod also represented all that Moses possessed. He did not even own the sheep that he kept. They belonged to his father-in-law Jethro. All Moses possessed was the rod. It represented his life, his identity and his livelihood. That rod was also a constant reminder that he had never reached his fullest potential because he had hoped to remain a Commander of people and not a Captain of sheep. Forty years earlier God had moved on his heart to deliver Israel from Egypt, Exodus 2:11-14. Back then, Moses ran ahead of God and took matters into his own hand. Because he did, he felt like he had wasted his only opportunity to serve the Lord. Moses had come to believe that we was worthy of being no more than a shepherd. That stick told Moses, “You are nothing but a shepherd keeping another man’s flock!”
Right where you are, like Moses, we also hold some things in our hands today. Some of those things are good things and others are evil. Here is a short list of some of the things we hold on to today: the past, some pet sin, some hard feelings over things people have done or said to us, unforgiveness, the sorrows of life, feelings of inadequacy, negativity, talents, natural abilities, and accomplishments. All of these things, whether they are good or bad, identify us and control our lives. We come to depend on the things we hold in our hands and we may even think we can’t live without them. They become an integral part of our lives. Like a shepherd leans on his staff, we lean on the things that we hold in our hands. But God expects us to turn what is in our hands to evidence of miracles by extension of His grace.
Our Awesomely Awesome God is never limited or terrified by our lack or needfulness. He says, what you have right now is exactly more than enough; it’s what he need to work in and through you. The world we live in thrives in showmanship and achievement and credentials. Those considered to be the ‘who’s who ‘in this life have earned that title because of achievement, they have wealth, knowledge, expertise, talent, fame, eloquence. The world is awed and wowed by achievement and stuff, but God does not work that way. “For the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. “ 1 Samuel 16:7
God can use you right where you are, He does not call the qualified, ‘He Qualifies The Called’. In Him is all we need to be. That’s why he says that “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” 2 Corinthians 12:9. God is looking for yielded vessels, not perfect vessels; Vessels willing to admit and confess their weakness, and lean on him for His Strength.
God asked Moses “What is that in your hand?”(Exodus 4:2), Moses has a stick. He was busy telling God what he didn’t have, but God was asking what do you have? Moses told God he had a stick. What is a stick, it was nothing in Moses eyes, and in human eyes, but God knew that stick when given to him (God) would be the Rod of God, a miracle working tool. It’s not about what we have; it’s what we have given to God that makes the difference. That stick was nothing in itself, but when use by God, it can become a Power tool.
The same with the little boy that had only 5 loaves and 2 fish; It wasn’t much considering the number of people who needed to be fed. In human eyes, this was nothing. What good were 5 loaves and 2 fish when a multitude needed to be fed? But the boy gave it to Jesus and in his hands it was More Than Enough to feed the thousands. It was multiplied in Jesus hands. It was not about what the boy had or how insignificant it was, but what it could be, surrendered to the Lord. Isn’t he the God who spoke into nothing and created everything?” In the beginning … the earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep” (Genesis 1:1, 2), there was nothing. But all he did was speak, and all that nothing became something spectacular. Nothing is too hard for him
David must have looked quite the laughing stock, facing a giant skilled in war with no armour but with just a sling and 5 stones. He surely looked a fool, but David knew that skill, training and armoury are not what would give him victory but rather having the Lord of hosts, the Lord of heavens armies with him. His little in God’s hands was more than enough to slay any giant. All he needed was one stone to slay him who terrified the army of Israel. The difference is the army trusted in their skill but David trusted in Gods power. “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of hosts. “ (Zechariah 4:6)
What is in your hand? Stammering lips, inadequate education, poverty, dysfunctional background, shady past, diseased body, unpopular personality, weak demeanour, no connections, just an impossible dream, no skill, no talent, no money, fear, timidity? IT IS ENOUGH. Give that to God and he WILL use it. He’s simply asking for what you have, not what you don’t have. He will do the rest, it’s HE that has what we need; it’s HE that equips. He simply asks us to GIVE it all to him, even the nothing we have. No wonder Elijah operated in that form while talking to the widow of Zarephath in 1Kings 17. Give the man of God first and the barrel of meal shall not cease because God Himself has spoken that the woman was going to be the instrument of Elijah’s sustenance in the days of famine.
God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-29
Are you of the generation of people who are seeking for a miracle abroad when there is a miracle above? You can be abroad and men in the village can be better than you.
Do you think about past failures too much? Do you have fearful thoughts about the future? That you have forgot to look at your hands?
Do you go about complaining to others about how big your trouble is and how people have not helped you and how hard your helpers are in giving you money and have failed to realise the things in your hands? Have you become a permanent beggar? The same hand that can swallow troubles can also become leprous as snow? Exodus 4:6
Are your current circumstances and relationships lacking the benefits and Glory of God because you have failed to realise the miracle in your hand?
I will bless the works of your hands? What is in your hands? Deut 28:12
Are you of the generation that are lazy and fearful and timid? Do you allow laziness and fear of failure stop you from looking at the things in your hand? Do you understand that in life, success is not the absence of failure but the presence of God?
Are you of the generation that is hoarding the blessings of God and gathering for your unborn children when your brother is in need?
It is in your hand, you hold a miracle, what you need is to turn it to him; God is in the business to qualify that hand to perform extraordinarily. He uses common men who held in their hands common things to do uncommon things.
You can set in motion, the miracle that you desire. I challenge you to open your eyes and look at your hands, you have got it, you have got the seed, and you have got the power because heaven has enlisted you as a candidate of miracle. Mark 16:17-18, Acts 19:11. God took that stick, that weak, powerless, dead, dry stick and used it in a mighty way, simply because Moses yielded it to the Lord. Had it remained in Moses’ hands, it would have held no power for God, but it would have held all power over his life. Because he yielded to the Lord, he was freed from its power over him and he was free to use its power for the glory of God.
Finally, I do not know what you hold in your hand today. But, I do know this: If what you hold in your hand is not yielded to the Lord, it is a hindrance in your life! It holds you back from being everything you could be for the Lord. Not only does it hold you back, but it also affects everyone around you! It affects your family. It affects your church. It affects everything you touch in your life and everything that touches you. Look at your hands. You hold the miracle.
